Heart shaped roads around Galston.

by Alex Christie
  • Heart,Casket,Spiral & Eight.

I noticed these shapes when I first used Cycle Ayrshire by the CTC Ayrshire.Drew Moyes had used red to show the route.

I then went to my Ordnance Survey Landranger 70 and also noticed an eight shaped route which I coloured Gold in memory of 2008.

Highlighting these I also realised the beginnings of a spiral which strangely passed over areas which had recently received regeneration funding.

Marking this spiral blue, then going to a larger map of the West coast of Scotland the points passed through had also received recent regeneration.

As you can see from the picture the centre is in Newmilns at Jacob's Ladder. The two Hearts seem to be strung on the spiral. One to represent the casket the other the Heart of a King.Pointing North.

The glade beside Jacob's Ladder,I have decided to call Bruce's Rest in memory of King Robert the Bruce's journey from Galston to Loudoun Hill in 1307.I imagine he would have paused here to gather his strength. This reminded me that Robert Burns paused in Newmilns before deciding to publish his first edition of poems in 1786.A new Burns walk is introduced this year.Irvine Valley Walking and Outdoor Festival which this year joins the Music Festival was thought up by Valley people. The I.V.R.P. meets monthly in Newmilns.

The Rivers Cessnock and Anne seem to flow with the spiral.

I announce the upcoming BHF Heart, Casket, Infinity cycle event. 9th May 2010. British Heart Foundation and Sustrans promote Lifecycle. Health and Wellbeing. The three choices of route and varying difficulties should prove popular with participants and spectators. Taking place on the Eve of the Battle of Loudoun Hill in 10~05~1307, dressing appropriately would not be amiss.
Hopefully the thousands who attended Run/Walk/Cycle the Road a few years ago will enjoy starting and finishing in the Avenue at Loudoun Castle Theme Park.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
