'Galston Mining Memories'

  • Site where the mining memorial stone will be installed.
A small group comprising sons of Galston coal miners has set out to record a short history of coal-mining in the Parishes of Galston and Loudoun, which will include the names of the many men and boys from this area who were killed in local mines. It is hoped that the booklet of 'Galston Mining Memories' will be a meaningful contribution to the recorded history of the people and parishes of Galston and Loudoun, and provide interesting information for people who may be researching their family history.

In conjunction with this account of what was a major industry in this area for around 80 years, a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives 'Below the Streets of Galston', which takes the form of a bronze plaque inserted on a large rough hewn whin boulder, has been prepared for installation and dedication in Barr Street Gardens, on a date (yet to be finalised) in May, 2009. Further information will - in due course - be published on this website.

If you have any information or photographs relating to local mines, or details of family members who died in coal-mining accidents, please contact John Connell (tel: 01563 821279 or e-mail: alplace@waitrose.com).

Alexander McCallum says

Would love to get involved in this. I have coal mining ancestors in my family tree in Galston in the 19th century including Kennedy Boyd and Thomas Frazer. Would love to find out more and contribute.

In memory of my Gt. Grandfather Moses Wilson died in Loudon No 6 in 1923. If anyone finds out what happened whilst they are researching I would be grateful for info.  All I know is his death cert doen't have enough room for the list of breakages..... I think he fell down a mine shaft at Number 6 - wherever THAT was!
