Have your say: Is Tesco welcome in Galston?

  • Tesco: do we want one of these in the village?

Galston's Tesco tale rumbles on, with no clear idea if the supermarket giant will get to open a store in Polwarth Street or not.

Tesco has planned to build a store next to the Co-op for a couple of years now.

When the plan was first announced, 600 people signed a petition to keep the supermarket out of Galston, according to The Kilmarnock Standard.

Tesco, on the other hand, claimed "overwhelming public support" after exhibiting its plans in the community centre.

The supermarket chain says it will create 250 local jobs if given the go-ahead.

East Ayrshire Council was due to consider Tesco's plan earlier this month, but delayed the application saying it wasn't ready to be submitted to the planning committee.

So what do we all think? Do we want this Tesco or not? s1galston is the place to discuss these important local issues.

UPDATE: The store was approved by East Ayrshire Council's planning committee on an 8-4 vote. More in the Kilmarnock Standard.

This is what Galston needs. Tescos will draw people from other towns to Galston, and this will boost the local economy. Lets not live in the back waters, lets be the forward thinking town in East Ayrshire. Tescos - Yes yes yes.

I'm coming in on this issue late, and from America (daughter of James Alexander, born in Galston in 1899 or so).  Is the concern based upon how the presence of Tesco would somehow change Galston?

I can't understand why this is dragging on and on.  I am looking forward to Tesco opening in Galston because it is one of my favourite shops, but my main hopes are not just for the shopping but for the proposed 250 jobs that it will bring to the Irvine Valley.

Where did the Standard get the 600 from? Kilmarnock? The council has not put the people of Galston interests first. Come election time we can make them unemployed. They then could try for a job in Tescos.

ANGELA THOMSON says

Tescos's coming to Galston is a terrible idea, the problems it will cause with the river alone is an enough of a reason to stop this happening. SEPA have already advised Tesco of their concerns and surprise, surprise they arent interested in what SEPA thinks. Good for the local economy! - dont think so! , shoppers will just go there then  go home- (Tescos sells everything  remember) why would anyone go into the heart of the town. Tescos coming to Galston will have a negative impact on the the local economy.Def a bad idea!

February is nearly over and the corner looks just as it has for years.

I know there are many people against this project. From all around and about.

Who would invest in this area now ?

Hopefully anyone, Tesco included will go against the current 2011

trend and Locate, Locate, Locate.

I think now that I see the cafe at the four corners eventually opening Galston and Gauchalland might be at a point where even though the Theme Park has closed the population is enough to grant us fifth chance.
